Have you ever noticed how some conversations just seem to run away from you? You start off with a simple “hello,” and before you know it, you’re the only one talking, desperately trying to keep the dialogue afloat. I know this feeling all too well. You see, I have a confession to make: I talk too much.

But here’s the thing – it’s not just about talking; it’s about active listening, or rather, the lack thereof. Despite my best intentions, my impatience often gets the better of me, causing frustration and disengagement in the very conversations I seek to enrich. It took me years to realize this, but now, I’m determined to change.

Navigating the Challenges of Impatience and Learning to Listen with Intent

When I meet someone, I say hi and start the conversation on a topic. Then I pause and see if that engages them. I used to get frustrated with some people and throw another topic after another topic. And sometimes in my frustration, I keep talking instead of ending it.

I solved this problem by saying hi, and asking the other person a question like how is the weather? I count to 5. Let them process the question and wait for them to talk and pause again. However, I am not perfect and still constantly fail.

Embracing Growth and Connection Through Active Listening

So today, I want to share with you how I’m actively working on this aspect of myself. It’s a journey of self-awareness and growth, but one that I’m committed to. By slowing down, pausing, and truly listening, I’m discovering the richness of genuine conversation and the connections it fosters.

In essence, I’ve come full circle – from recognizing my tendency to dominate conversations to actively engaging in a more balanced and meaningful dialogue. And while I may still stumble along the way, I’m excited about the progress I’ve made and the connections I’ve forged.

In this fast-paced world, let’s not forget the power of slowing down and truly listening to one another. It’s where understanding begins and meaningful connections thrive.
